Can prepaid gift cards be worth less than what I paid for them?

They can be. Some gift card issuers assess fees under certain specified conditions. These fees are subtracted from the value of a gift card, thereby decreasing its value. A common situation where fees are charged is when a gift card holder does not use a gift card to make a purchase within a specified period of time. Be sure to inquire about gift card policies before purchasing one.
