When is it too late in the fall to plant grass seed in Minnesota?

Last Updated: January 07, 2011

The best time to plant grass seed in Minnesota is from mid-August through Sept. 10. This can be extended another week in the southwest part of the state. Planting much after Sept. 10 may not ensure enough time for grass seedlings to grow a root system that is vigorous enough to sustain the grass seedlings through the winter.
