What is non-point source water pollution?

Last Updated: February 18, 2008

View as web page

Non-point water pollution originates over a wide area including runoff from fields, storm water from streets, air pollution, and contaminated groundwater. There is little direction of the flow except by ditches and drain lines. The runoff flows directly into streams, rivers and lakes or enters the groundwater. This type of pollution is difficult to control and treat.
