The term anaerobic refers to biological activity that occurs without oxygen. Some bacteria can use certain compounds in the absence of dissolved oxygen to get the energy they need. As a result, they produce substances such as hydrogen sulfide (smells like rotten eggs) and methane (an explosive gas) instead of carbon dioxide.
