What is a Hydrometer?

Last Updated: February 18, 2008

A hydrometer is a floating tube or dial that measures the Specific Gravity (density) of a liquid. Pure water has a specific gravity of one. Solutions with a specific gravity greater than one are denser than pure water. Ocean water has a specific gravity of about 1.022 and is denser than pure water. The specific gravity reading can be converted to a salinity reading if the water temperature is known.
