Nitrogen exists in many forms – as a gas, in soil minerals and in organic matter such as proteins. Eighty-percent of our atmosphere is composed of nitrogen. The ammonia and nitrite forms are toxic to organisms but the nitrate form is a primary nutrient for plant growth. All forms of nitrogen are highly water-soluble and move easily through the environment.
