Phosphorus exists in mineral and organic forms. The organic form is important in the energy processes in living organisms. The mineral form is important for plant root growth. It is not highly soluble and readily attaches to soil particles. Because of this, soil erosion can result in the movement of phosphates in the environment. Phosphorus applied to the soil surface should be worked into the root zone as it does not move within the soil very much. Purpling of leaves is a common sign of phosphorus deficiency.
