The yellow-headed spruce sawfly does inflict damage on Black Hills spruce. The first activity is seen in mid-June. Spray foliage when larvae are small (less than or equal to half the full-grown size) and before damage is extensive. Limit treatments to areas of plants where sawflies are feeding unless sawflies are widespread throughout the tree. Some pesticides suggested to use are: horticultural oil and insecticidal soap.
