Four types of financial professionals are available to prepare your tax returns: paid return preparers, enrolled agents, accountants, and tax attorneys.

Paid return preparers often work for nationwide tax preparation firms and have typically been trained by their firm to do relatively simple tax forms.

Enrolled agents have more training, plus approval to represent you before the Internal Revenue Service if you are audited.

If your tax return is more complicated, particularly if you own interest in a business or are self-employed, a certified public accountant (C.P.A.) may be the best choice.

If you have large assets and complex finances or if you anticipate legal issues, you might want to hire a tax attorney.
