If you have worked with a credit card company to reduce the amount that you owe, does this hurt your credit history?

The simple answer is yes, but it depends. Obviously, someone who negotiates payments with a lender probably would have a credit history that would not be as good as if there were no credit trouble and if the balance had not grown to an unmanageable amount. However, some creditors appreciate a customer’s sense of responsibility, initiative, and diligence in resolving issues. Some might also consider extenuating circumstances such as job loss and illness. Other creditors may not take these factors into account or may not have the flexibility to consider subjective factors.
