I had a vet surgically repair a cow with a vaginal prolapse. She is close to calving. When should I remove the repaired string from her opening?

Of course, this is a question best answered by the attending veterinarian. Observe the cow closely and remove the suture only after the cow is in advanced stages of labor. This advice is difficult to follow, but early removal of the suture may allow the vagina to prolapse again, thus compounding the problem. Suturing the vulva closed to correct a vaginal prolapse should be considered a salvage procedure done in hopes of keeping the cow through this final pregnancy. If you get a live calf, then you've gambled and won. The cow should not be re-bred.
