Flank spaying is removing the ovaries from a heifer by making an incision in the left flank. Once the incision is made, the ovaries are removed by using long-handled scissors or instruments. The incision is closed by suture or hog rings. If suture is used, it should be removed; if hog rings are used, they will usually fall out over the next few months.
Another popular method of spaying is using a K-R instrument. This instrument is inserted into the vagina and pushed through the vaginal wall. The ovaries are then manipulated into the instrument and removed. This method does not involve an external incision.
Both methods have advantages and disadvantages.
