The best place to start this process is to talk to other ranchers and cow-calf producers in the area who have retained ownership or custom fed cattle in the past. They can typically recommend feedlots that will fit your specific needs. In addition, other industry professionals may be able to assist you with recommendations. Your veterinarian; county, regional, or state Cooperative Extension staff; or your feed dealer may be able to offer suggestions.
Develop a list of criteria for the feedlot. For example, are there specific marketing programs or alliances you would like to participate in? What are your requirements for financing? See how well each of the feedlots on your list fits your criteria. You’ll probably find several which may fit. Take the time to compare costs, and visit the top two or three on your list. The visit will give you a good feel as to your comfort level with the manager, the level of service you can expect, and the type of care your cattle will receive. Be sure you discuss your plan with your lender prior to signing any contracts or agreements.
