Natural beef production systems generally fall into three broad classifications of programs: 1) never ever, 2) withdrawal time, and 3) residue testing. Never ever programs require that the animals sold in the programs would have never received a growth-promoting implant or antibiotics (feed grade or injectable) in their lifetime. Withdrawal time programs require that the animals not receive growth-promoting implants or antibiotics for a specified period prior to harvest. In most cases, this time period ranges from 100 to 120 days prior to harvest. Residue testing programs test the product for a range of residues prior to marketing. This is the least common program.
In addition to requirements regarding implant and antibiotic usage, most companies marketing natural beef products have additional requirements for cow-calf producers, stocker operators, and feedlots. Examples of additional requirements include specific feeding requirements (e.g., feeding corn or vitamin E), source and age verification, and breed or cattle type specifications. To determine if your calves qualify for specific programs, you should contact the specific companies to fully understand their specific requirements.
