I have a question about transportation. I want to purchase 50 to 75 head of breed heifers in North Dakota. I am concerned about transporting these heifers about 1,100 miles. They are due to calve mid-February to late March.

As these heifers move closer to calving, there is the increased chance of late abortion. So try to get it done soon, if possible. Also, do not crowd the heifers on the truck, and leave room so they can lie down if they want to. You may want to consider some bedding to make it more comfortable, but make sure the bedding does not make the floor slick so that footing becomes a problem. Also, consider breaking the trip up so that the heifers can get out of the truck for water, maybe some hay, and a chance to lie down. If you're hauling from North Dakota, watch the weather, and try to pick a time when there seems to be a chance that snow or ice is not in the forecast.
