Can the nutritional program of a cow/calf operation have a carryover effect on calf feedlot performance?

Yes. Cowherd nutrition can affect post-weaning calf development. Texas Ranch to Rail data indicate that cowherds fed mineral supplements have healthier calves throughout the feedlot phase. Healthy calves continue to have greater average daily gains, improved feed efficiency, and greater USDA quality grades than calves that have experienced sickness. Cowherd nutritional programs that promote pre-weaning growth have been questioned as to reducing feedlot performance. This has not been substantiated in the scientific literature, and therefore producers are encouraged to feed cows to optimize reproduction and the cost related to the pounds of calf weaned. The University of Illinois has shown that energy intake of calves between 80 and 250 days of age can have an effect on carcass quality grades of calf-feds. Increased energy intake during this period will have a positive effect on marbling score.
