Does feeding Tylan during the whole feeding period hurt the rumen microflora? Also, does feeding chloratetracycline at a high rate for a few days to prevent pneumonia hurt the rumen microflora?

Tylan at approved levels has no undesirable effects on rumen flora that we are aware of. Chloratetracycline (CTC), on the other hand, has been shown to affect some strains of bacteria when fed continuously at high levels. Intermittent feeding of 2 to 3 grams of CTC/head/day probably results in minor shifts in microflora but should not create a problem. However, data are limited regarding the intermittent feeding of 5 or more grams/day.
