Are drought-stricken corn stalks that are black and earless still a risk after several hard freezes for pregnant cows?

Cows will select corn, husk, leaves, and finally the stalk, in that order. If nitrates are present, they will be in the stalk only and the lower six inches of the stalk has the greatest concentration of nitrates. The corn field residue should be all right for cows. Do not force the cows to eat the stalks. Once the husk and leaves are fairly well cleaned up, move the cows to a new corn field or start feeding your winter ration. The dark-colored husk and leaves should not be a problem for the cows.
