Yes, wheat middlings can be used in creep feeds for beef calves. Wheat middlings are a by-product of the flour milling industry. Wheat middlings typically contain wheat bran, germ, screenings, shorts, red dog, mill tailings, and reject flour. Nutrient analysis does not vary a great deal and typically averages 18% CP, 11% ADF, 0.09% calcium, and 0.92% phosphorus. Wheat middlings are highly digestible and work well in a variety of applications, including creep feeds. Wheat middlings are palatable, and it is relatively easy to start calves on creep feed.

Wheat middlings are high in phosphorus and low in calcium, and a supplement containing high levels of calcium should be utilized in the creep feed formulation to balance the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. In addition, research results indicate that optimum performance (growth and feed efficiency) are obtained when wheat middlings are blended with other ingredients such as soyhulls, corn gluten feed, oats, or corn at levels ranging from one-third wheat middlings to two-thirds wheat middlings in the final creep feed formulation.
