In most cases, an analysis for moisture, crude protein, and energy (Total Digestible Nutrients, TDN) is sufficient to balance diets for beef cows. If the sample is a summer annual, consider testing for nitrates. If alfalfa, or any forage, shows substantial heat damage, browning, or mold, the percent crude protein will be adjusted for heat damage. An NIR (near-infrared) analysis will also include the analysis of calcium and phosphorus.
