Virtually all fall-planted forage crops, such as small grains and turnips, are sensitive to herbicide carryover like atrazine. These carryover problems are likely to be greater following a drought year than following normal precipitation. Winter rye tends to have more tolerance to atrazine carryover than the other small grains, so planting it offers the best chance of having a crop for early grazing or hay next spring. Nothing planted this late in the year is likely to provide much fall or winter grazing.
