Cleaning and disinfecting are two very important aspects of everyday biosecurity for livestock and poultry producers. Examples of disinfectants are listed below. Follow label directions carefully. Clean objects completely by scrubbing with hot soapy water before applying disinfectants. Disinfectants do not work in the presence of dirt, manure or other organic matter. Disinfectants can be applied with brushes or sprays. Follow manufacturers’ directions regarding surface contact time and product disposal.
Examples of Disinfectants
•Household bleach (sodium hypochlorite 6 percent): Mix ¼ cup of household bleach per gallon of water
•Nolvasan® (chlorhexidine diacetate 2 percent): Mix 3 fluid oz of Nolvasan per gallon of water
•Roccal®: Mix 0.5 to 1.5 fluid oz .of Roccal per gallon of water
•Lysol® spray for footwear
•Purell® hand pump for hand disinfection
