Many kinds of seeds germinate better when gentle bottom heat is applied. Gardeners who grow lots of plants from seed indoors each year usually invest in special heating pads, which can be expensive. Resourceful gardeners who start relatively few plants from seed use the tops of their refrigerators, where the temperature is just right for that purpose.
