Can I take time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act a few days at a time?

For employees of companies with 50 or more workers (within a 75-mile radius of each other) who lack employer-paid “sick days,” family and medical leave can be used during a medical crisis to care for a family member or for oneself. Eligible employees can receive up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year and return to their previous (or a similar) job and maintain health coverage while they’re away.

This leave can be taken in small increments. For example, cancer patients can take a few days or a week off after each chemotherapy treatment. You do not need to use the 12 weeks all at once. Employees must generally provide their employers with 30 days’ advance notice when their leave is “foreseeable.”
