Can eucalyptus shavings safely be used as bedding?

Last Updated: October 29, 2008

We are assuming that you are talking about shavings treated with eucalyptus oil. An Internet search revealed that a number of companies are treating and marketing eucalyptus-treated shavings and eucalyptus-treated straw for bedding. Also, some homemade fly repellents will have eucalyptus oil in the recipe. Therefore, the shavings should be safe for the average horse. However, since every horse is an individual, closely watch your horse for signs of skin irritation for the first several days if you elect to use these shavings.
