Family Caregiving Home

My dad is sick and had to quit his job. He and my mom have a good relationship, but she is still working to make sure they have health insurance. She works long hours in a job that is very stressful. After a long day at work, she rushes home to fix dinner for my dad and pay the bills. What can I do to help her?

It seems as if your mother’s job is the primary source of her stress and worry; not the things she is doing to help your dad. There are different types of caregiving experiences. Your mother seems to fall in a group of caregivers under a lot of stress due to other circumstances. This includes people who are worriers and often have high levels of anxiety. Worrying might be a way your mother has coped with stressful situations in the past. She may benefit from developing new stress management skills. It may also be helpful to her to learn the effects that stress can have on health and well-being. Perhaps you can find a class that will help her learn and practice stress-management techniques. Additionally, encourage her to take some time for herself. Spending time doing what she enjoys will revive her and make her feel better about herself.
