An index is a collection of stocks or bonds that is used to provide a benchmark of investment performance. The daily ups and downs of an index reflect market gains and losses. Indexes have been in existence for over a century as a way to report investment trends. Perhaps the most widely known stock market index, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, was created by two Wall Street Journal reporters, Charles Dow and Eddie Jones, in the late 1800s.
