Manure pit gases are the natural products of the decomposition of manure. When the manure decomposes in an enclosed space, such as a below-barn pit, the gases can accumulate to levels that are of concern to human and animal health and safety.

The gases of primary concern are ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and methane. For more information about these gases and safety considerations, go to Manure Storage Safety
