Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

We have the Blushing Bride-Endless Summer hydrangeas. I have them planted under our screen porch on the edge so they can get some sun. They did just terrific all summer as long as I watered them frequently. I used cypress mulch around the base and that worked fine. My question is how should they be winterized? Should I cut them back and cover them with burlap like the original Endless Summer variety? I was thinking of using straw.

It is not necessary to cut back either Endless Summer or Blushing Bride. However, the mulch is essential for both. If you mulch them well enough and deep enough, you may be able to keep some of this year's stems. Blushing Bride is considered hardy through Zone 5, although it is a "trial plant" in Zone 4. These hydrangeas need warm soil to start growth in the spring so you will see growth from the ground late in the spring. Sometime even later, leaves will sprout from any stems that wintered over. Reblooming hydrangeas like Endless Summer bloom on the current season growth, but can also bloom on the old wood as well, so if they make it through the winter undamaged, you can have early blooms and then the later blooms as well.
