Mitigation steps include:
* Repairing deep cracks in ceilings and foundations,
* Anchoring overhead lighting fixtures to the ceiling,
* Attaching free standing shelving to the wall
* Anchoring water heaters to sturdy supports, and
* Following local seismic building standards.

Prepare your home. Know where and how to shut off electricity, gas and water at main switches and valves. Hold earthquake drills with your household and locate safe spots in each room and identify danger zones.

Develop a plan for reuniting your household after an earthquake. Review your insurance policy and have important documents and papers in a safe place. Be prepared to survive on your own for at least three days.
