Does application technique affect availability of phosphorus fertilizer?

Last Updated: November 29, 2007

Yes. Phosphorus is highly immobile in the soil and under high pH, calcareous soils, soluble forms of fertilizer P may quickly revert to insoluble forms rendering the P unavailable to the crop. Concentrating the application of P fertilizer through banding as close to the root zone as possible is the most efficient method of P fertilization. Broadcast application is the least efficient.
