Inside the boll, which is shaped like a tiny football, moist fibers grow and push out from the newly formed seeds beginning when the blossom opens. As the boll ripens, it turns brown and the fibers continue to expand. Finally, they split the boll apart and the fluffy cotton bursts forth. Generally, fibers mature and bolls open 50 to 70 days after the blossom opens.
