Older adults in the United States prefer to live independently and in their own homes. In the United States, 23.4 percent of households report at least one person age 65 or older living in the home. Almost 10 percent, or 9.7 million householders, were older adults (age 65 or older) living alone. Only 1.9 million (5.7 percent) of older adults live in group quarters.
