We want to plant an Ohio Buckeye tree at our future home (about 3 years). Can we get a sapling and keep it alive in a large pot until we move?

For the best success and long term health of your tree plant your Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) directly where you want it to grow at your new  home. Overwintering a container grown tree climate can be problematic. Temperature fluctuations and extremes (freezing/thawing) can lead to many problems including causing the tree to heave right out of the pot, wreaking havoc with the roots. Aesculus glabra has large compound leaves that catch the wind so you would have issues with the potted tree tipping over.  Also, there is a condition called encircling roots that can form when a tree is grown in a container for too long. Roots travel the path of least resistance so once a root hits the inside edge of the container it will begin to grow 'sideways'. This encourages the roots to develop an encircling pattern inside the container and when the tree is later set into the ground the roots may not anchor the tree properly.  Ohio Buckeye does not tolerate extended drought or excessive heat. A pot above ground subjects roots to extreme temperature and moisture fluctuations compared to roots growing underground.  Adequate moisture and nutrients are essential throughout the growing season. To sum up, your tree will get off to a better start if you plant it directly in the ground where you want it to grow.  For more fun facts on Ohio Buckeyes and care information, visit Northwest Ohio Nature.
