The majority of manure produced in the U.S. is land applied for crop production. Manure serves as a valuable nutrient resource for crop production and can reduce the need for commercial fertilizer. Manure application generally also improves soil quality. When manure is applied at proper rates, using appropriate practices, it can be environmentally preferable to commercial fertilizer. A very small (but growing) proportion of manure is composted for horticultural use, used for energy production, or processed for other value added products but ultimately, most manure is land applied.
