Geospatial technologies are used widely throughout the Cooperative Extension system, but not all states have the same level of adoption and staff time assigned to this area.
Some states have a full time Geospatial Extension Specialist, whose primary responsibility is outreach in the areas of GPS, GIS, and remote sensing. The activities of these specialists range from hands-on workshops to facilitating the use of geospatial technology through Internet mapping and applied research projects. If you live in or near a state covered by the National Geospatial Technology Extension Network (NGTEN), the Geospatial Extension Specialist for that state is a great place to start.
Even if your state does not have such a position, it is likely that there is still someone in Cooperative Extension who is engaged in geospatial technology use and outreach. For more information, contact your Cooperative Extension state office directly.
