The best potential for fruit trees that will grow and produce at an 8,400-foot elevation will be some of the hardy, short-season apples developed for Minnesota and Canada. Check the nursery catalogs for those cultivars that say "developed for Minnesota" (for example, the 'Haralson' apple). There are also additional cultivars available. If you really want to grow fruit trees at an 8,000-foot elevation, the best suggestion would be to build a greenhouse in which to grow them. The highest elevation commercial orchards in Colorado are in Cedaredge at an elevation of 6,800 feet. You are really facing a challenge at 8,400 feet!
