Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) is a creeping perennial noxious weed that grows in colonies. Pulling is not generally very effective because the root system stores tremendous amounts of food; however, regular, persistent pulling may gradually starve the root system. Chemical control with 2,4-D combinations are effective on young shoots in spring and in August/September. Glyphosate is effective but should only be used in non-lawn areas. Proper cultural practices that increase lawn density and healthy turf will help reduce occurrence. For more information on Canada thistle, see fact sheets Canada Thistle, and Lawn Care.
