How do I know if my pine trees are infested with the mountain pine beetle?

External symptoms are: popcorn-like masses of resin on the trunk, boring dust at tree base and patches of missing bark or bark flakes at tree base as the result of woodpecker predation. If you take off the bark, you can see the tunnels in the shape of a hook, and the actual beetles, or their larva.
