A winterizing fertilizer contains a low percentage of nitrogen and high percentages of phosphorus and potassium. Research shows this is the opposite of what turfgrass needs. Between October 15 and December 15, Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass lawns should receive two pounds of nitrogen per one-thousand square feet of lawn area.
