Can houseplants be moved outdoors for the summer?

Last Updated: January 03, 2012

You can improve the vigor of houseplants by moving them outdoors for the summer, but it's best to wait until night temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees Fahrenheit and all danger of frost has passed. When transferring the plants outdoors, move them first to a shaded location and then gradually expose them to more light.  The  plant must have time to adapt  to the higher light levels outdoors otherwise you can scorch the foliage.  For more information on moving houseplants outdoors for the summer please see the PlantTalk script Moving houseplants outdoors.
