The best time for soil testing fields or gardens is before each cropping or growing season; however, soil tests can be done any time of the year. Laboratories that perform routine soil testing are generally not as busy during the fall and winter months, so results may be returned more quickly, enabling growers or gardeners to make plans for next year’s crop. For growers, fertility trends over a number of years will provide important information about efficiency and adequacy of a fertilizer program. Nitrate nitrogen levels are constantly changing so sampling close to planting date will also give a more accurate idea of what the soil actually needs to achieve best results.
