When amending sandy soils, the goal is to increase the soil’s ability to hold moisture and store nutrients. This can be done by using organic amendments that are well decomposed, such as compost or aged manure. Sandy soil should be amended with composted organic matter at a rate of three cubic yards per 1,000 square feet (about an inch thick on the surface). It should be tilled in about four inches and raked smooth before adding grass seed, installing sod or doing any other type of garden planting.
