What is thatch in a lawn?

Last Updated: July 06, 2010

View as web page

Thatch is a tight, brown, spongy, organic layer of both living and dead grass roots and stems that accumulate close to the soil surface. Core aerating on an annual basis helps to alleviate the problem. Too much water and too much fertilizer may contribute to thatch build-up.
