What are some basics of growing roses in Colorado?

Roses do best in full suns sites with well-drained soil and good air circulation. In Colorado it is important to plant roses with the graft union (if there is one) one to two inches below the soil line to protect the graft from our severe winter temperatures. All types of roses need at least one inch of water per week during periods of active growth.  For more details on fertilization and pruning please see the Colorado PlantTalk script "Roses: Maintenance" .
