The feel and appearance of soil indicates soil moisture status. Using a soil tube, soil auger, or tile spade to take samples of soil at intervals throughout the depth of the active root zone will help to determine moisture content. Soil moisture status can be estimated by firmly squeezing a handful of soil and comparing results with the “Soil Moisture Interpretation Chart” found in the fact sheet Estimating Soil Moisture.
