Why are different kinds of clematis pruned differently?

Some types of clematis flower on new growth as it appears each year. These clematis should be cut back to several inches from the ground early in the spring each year to encourage new growth that produces flowers. Other types of clematis produce their flowers on the vines that matured in the previous year. They should only be cut back after flowering, to encourage fresh growth through the remainder of the summer.
