For best success, choose plants that are hardy to USDA zone 3 or 4. Specific elevation and microclimate within a garden will allow for some flexibility when choosing plants. Plants that are drought tolerant will be better suited to well-drained mountain soils and the intense sunlight and exposure at high elevations. Plants for mountainous areas must be able to withstand daily temperature fluctuations of 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. For more information, please see the PlantTalk script "Mountain perennials: choosing."
