For best success, choose plants that are hardy to USDA zone 3 or 4. Specific elevation and microclimate within a garden will allow for some flexibility when choosing plants. Plants that are drought tolerant will be better suited to well-drained mountain soils and the intense sunlight and exposure at high elevations. Plants for mountainous areas must be able to withstand daily temperature fluctuations of 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
