When is the best time to divide overgrown perennials?

Last Updated: July 07, 2010

View as web page

The general guideline is to divide late blooming perennials such as fall asters and chrysanthemums in the spring so that they will have plenty of time to establish before they flower. Most perennials can be divided in either spring or fall. Bearded iris are best done in the late summer. Peonies are best done in September or early October.
