Shade loving perennials have their ancestry in the woodland forests where soils are rich with organic material and slightly acidic. Colorado soils have a greater concentration of mineral content and are more alkaline. The addition of compost and sphagnum peat moss to soil will improve the texture and moisture retention and lower the alkalinity.
